Facebook Post by Rabbi Perlin in the Time of Coronavirus (4/26/2020)
Sunday Post 4.26.20: The Amy in the House
by Rabbi Amy R. Perlin, D.D.
The sun did not shine; It was too wet to pray,
So we sat in the house all that cold, cold wet day.
I sat there with Gary; we sat there we two
And I said, “How I wish we had something to do!”
Too wet to go out; Couldn’t go to a mall,
So we sat in the house; We did nothing at all.
So all we could do was to Sit! Sit! Sit! Sit!
And we did not like it. Not one little bit.
We’re feeling just fine, with the virus at bay.
We’ve been stuck in the house.
It’s our 37th day.
I’m stuck here with Gary; we’re stuck here we two
And I say, “Don’t you know there’s more packing to do?”
Not safe to go out, so the grandchildren call.
But, both of us dreading, another Zoom call.
So all we can do is to Pack! Pack! Pack! Pack!
And hope that someday we will get our lives back.
I know it is wet, and the sun is not sunny.
So we search Netflix for a show that is funny.
We know some good games, we play Scrabble each day,
With words like “qat,” and “qi,” and “Quay.”
We cook great food, had souffle yesterday
Gary made mandelbread, his mother’s way.
I know this will end, not in one day or two,
And people will ask, so “What did you do?”
I’ll tell them politely, I wrote on Facebook,
And the rest of the time I would pack, clean, and cook.
We canceled our trips, we ordered stuff online,
We social distanced at home, we did just fine.
When someone asks you, what story will you tell?
Will you say you were safe, you were home, you were well?
Will you tell them the struggles and how you got through?
Will you remember having nothing to do?
