Social Action at TBS
The Gimilut Chasadim (acts of loving kindness) Committee plans and implements a variety of opportunities throughout the year for TBS members — young and older, individuals and families — to get involved and help those in need in our local community and around the globe. The committee’s work helps TBS members fulfill our mission “to care for one another and the world around us.”
Whether you want to volunteer, donate for a collection or provide financial support, there’s a way for each TBS member to get involved and make a difference in others’ lives.
The committee’s areas of focus include:
- Addressing food insecurity through ongoing support of organizations like the Lorton Community Action Center, participation in the annual Burke Hunger Walk, and sponsorship and volunteering for Together We Rise Against Hunger in partnership with our neighbors at Christ Church and other faith-based organizations.
- Making life a little easier for children being treated for cancer and other serious illnesses by knitting for Cancer Kickin’ Critters, cooking meals at Ronald McDonald House, and donating to Horizons Day Camp.
- Supporting families and individuals in need by volunteering at Northern Virginia’s Family Services’ Clock Tower Thrift Shop, donating warm clothing and toiletries to Lorton Community Action Center; volunteering at CRi group homes, and interacting with seniors at Greenspring Senior Living and Heatherwood Independent and Assisted Living.
- Helping Afghan refugees transition to life in Northern Virginia.
- Tending to the earth by volunteering for Earth Sangha and Fairfax Releaf.
The committee’s work truly comes to life in the planning and execution of our annual Yom Chesed (Day of Loving Kindness), a Temple-wide day of community service which includes over 20 activities supporting more than 15 local organizations.
